Self Care? Sounds GREAT! But how do I do it?
Personally, I need clear, simple, and practical things that I can actually do. Or not do! For example — just stop pushing your shoulders back and down, people! This is the most common and damaging habit people who worry about their posture have – even me!
Yes I, too, have a habit of pulling my shoulders back and down. To accomplish that, I also have to lift my sacrum and chest, tuck my chin in a little, and slightly choke myself. Yack.
I’m not surprised to find myself doing all those things, because unconscious habits are….ubiquitous! They are just a part of our nervous system. Better to make friends with them and learn how to play well together. The Alexander Technique gives me a practical way to accept the presence of “habit” and work with it constructively.
Creative people tend to give 110% all of the time, which, if you think about it, is conducive to unconscious habits taking over. We rush, multitask, get overwhelmed and resort to what we know best. To create better conditions in your central nervous system you actually need to:
1) GIVE UP PUSHING SO HARD
so that you can
2) BECOME THE BEST _______YOU CAN BE
The recent, tragic death of Prince has really upset me. Here’s a person who gave so much, on so many levels, and who “hit it out of the ball park” every single performance.
Prince is a performer who did NOT hold back. And I think that’s a sign of health. But I also I saw how hard he pushed his body, and from personal experience I know there is always a price to pay for that. The body has limits that are real.
I’m the LAST person to tell a creative person to hold back. But I do hope to give each individual powerful, embodied tools so they can decide where they really want to devote their energy. What are YOUR limits? Is it OK to have a limit? Is it even possible to push past it, really?
These are deeply personal questions with unique answers for every person who works with me. There is no single answer. But at least you don’t have to make those judgment calls alone, without help. You can get reliable feedback and information, first from a teacher, and then from your own body, that will guide you flawlessly in those moment-to-moment decisions about what to let go of and what to say YES! to.
I’m forever grateful to all my teachers for giving me support in learning who I am and how to accomplish my goals in a self-loving way. My way of giving back is to claim a simple, easy, infinite goal: to end chronic shoulder tension, for everyone who wants to, forever!
